Read full description of the books:
I wanted to write this review for a long time but was holding back as my writing skills are not good enough to do justice to a writer of the stature of Ruskin Bond. No matter how many more great books that I read or things that I learn, Ruskin can never be replaced. Ruskin will always have a special place in my heart and let me explain why...
Like any typical North Indian kid, I used to look forward to my summer holidays away form the school. I, along with my cousins, would rush to complete our summer holiday homework, which our schools would bombard us with as they were against the idea of kids being kids and enjoying their holidays. Having finished all the projects in the first few days of the vacations itself( or so we told our parents.. wink wink), we would be invited to spend the rest of our holidays at my Nani's place in a small town in North India. This is where I have the fondest memories of my childhood.. running bare feat around the house, eating kalla khatta and choco-bar from the local hawker, nintendo video games, bathing naked under the cold lawn hose water in the evenings, Climbing and eating mulberries from the backyard tree, playing cricket and pithoo with my cousins and of course reading Ruskin Bond's stories before going to bed.
Ruskin would take me to the magical world of the mountains, forests, greenery, birds, ferocious tigers and leopards and other local legends. I loved all his short stories, whether they be fiction or the ones describing his own childhood. He might just be talking about a mundane morning walk in the hills but his writing makes me hear the birds, smell the tress and picture the scenes so vividly in my head its as if I'm there myself. It was Ruskin who made me fall in love with the Mountains and the Nature. A love that has only grown with time and I now fully practise as an adult.
He had a profound effect on the mind of a growing child and shaped a part of my personality. His writing is simple and profound. Thank you Ruskin.... you contributed to who I am today and I'll be forever grateful for that.
If you love nature then you should read Ruskin's short stories.
